EcoVadis Explained

EcoVadis is one of the world's most widely used business sustainability rating platforms. More than 130,000 companies across 175 countries have been assessed — and that number keeps growing as enterprise companies push sustainability requirements deeper into their supply chains.

What is EcoVadis?

A structured ESG questionnaire

EcoVadis asks about your sustainability policies, actions, and results across four categories. You submit supporting evidence alongside your answers — policies, data, certifications, and reports.

A supply chain compliance requirement

Enterprise companies increasingly require their suppliers to complete EcoVadis as a condition of doing business. Failing to complete one — or scoring too low — can put your vendor status at risk.

A score and a shareable badge

EcoVadis analysts review your submission and assign a score from 0–100. Score high enough and you earn a Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum badge — proof you can share with customers and in RFPs.

A business growth tool

Companies that earn EcoVadis badges use them to win new clients, strengthen RFP responses, and signal credibility to customers who increasingly vet suppliers on ESG performance.

Here's the bottom line: your enterprise customers — the Microsofts, Salesforces, and Walmarts of the world — are required to report on the sustainability of their supply chains. When they ask you to complete EcoVadis, they're not making a suggestion. Completing it accurately, and scoring well, is how you keep and grow those relationships.

Scoring & Badges

EcoVadis evaluates your company across four weighted categories. For most small businesses, the Environmental section carries the most weight — and it's the area where the most points are left on the table.

The Challenge

The EcoVadis questionnaire isn't just a form you fill out. It requires policies, data, and documented evidence across four categories. For businesses without a dedicated sustainability team, that's a lot to pull together while running an actual company.

Why EcoVadis is harder than it looks — especially for small businesses

The evidence gap is real

Most SMBs that self-submit leave significant points on the table in the Environmental section — not because they aren't doing the right things, but because they lack the documentation to prove it. EcoVadis rewards evidence, not intentions.

Timeline pressure

Enterprise customers set deadlines. If you've just received an EcoVadis request, you may have weeks — not months — to complete your submission. An experienced consultant compresses that timeline significantly.

Environment carries the most weight

For most small businesses, Environmental is the most heavily weighted category. A carbon accounting baseline and formal environmental policies make the biggest difference — and they're exactly what we specialize in.

Assessments renew annually

EcoVadis isn't a one-time exercise. Your score is reassessed each year, and your rating expires if you don't renew. Getting the right processes in place the first time sets you up to improve every cycle.

Our Process

We've built a turnkey process specifically for small and midsized businesses — no fluff, no generic sustainability consulting. Just practical, expert support that gets your submission done accurately and on time.

How we help you nail your EcoVadis assessment

Readiness review & gap assessment

We start by reviewing your existing policies, documentation, and any prior EcoVadis submissions. We identify where you're strong, where the gaps are, and what evidence you'll need — so nothing is a surprise during the submission.

Environmental section deep dive

The Environmental category is where most SMBs leave points on the table. We focus here first — helping you calculate your carbon footprint (if you haven't already), develop formal environmental policies, and build the evidence package that EcoVadis analysts are looking for.

Policy and documentation development

We help you create or strengthen the policies and procedures that EcoVadis rewards — not just for the assessment, but practical documents that are useful year after year. Think of it as building a sustainability foundation you actually own.

Submission support & quality review

Our team reviews your full submission before it goes in — checking for completeness, accuracy, and alignment with what EcoVadis analysts evaluate. We apply proven best practices to maximize your score before you hit submit.

Score review & improvement roadmap

Once your results are in, we walk you through your scorecard and build a roadmap for next cycle. Most clients see meaningful improvement year-over-year — that's how Silver badges turn into Gold.

Most projects complete in as little as 45 days.

Let's not sugarcoat it — sustainability assessments take work. Here's what happens when small businesses do that work with a team behind them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about EcoVadis

Whether you just received an EcoVadis invitation or you're actively comparing consultants, these are the questions we hear most.

  • EcoVadis is one of the world's most trusted business sustainability rating platforms, used by over 130,000 companies across 175 countries. It evaluates businesses across four categories — Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement — and assigns a score from 0–100 based on your policies, actions, and results. Companies that score high enough earn a Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum badge, which they can share with customers, include in RFPs, and display as proof of sustainability performance.

  • Large enterprise companies — like Microsoft, Salesforce, Walmart, and Target — are required to report on the sustainability of their supply chains to investors, regulators, and their own customers. To fulfill those commitments, they ask their suppliers to complete EcoVadis (or similar) assessments. It's their way of verifying that the businesses they work with share their sustainability values. Suppliers who can't complete the assessment — or who score below acceptable thresholds — risk losing vendor status or being deprioritized in future business.

  • EcoVadis scores your company on a scale of 0–100 across four weighted categories: Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement. The weight of each category is determined by your industry and company size. For most small businesses, Environment carries the most weight. Scores are then benchmarked against all companies in your industry globally, and badge thresholds are set by percentile: Bronze (top 35%), Silver (top 15%), Gold (top 5%), and Platinum (top 1%).

  • When working with RyeStrategy, most clients complete their EcoVadis submission in as little as 45 days. The actual timeline depends on how quickly your team can provide documentation and how much policy development is needed upfront. If you have a customer-imposed deadline, let us know in your first call — we'll scope the project to fit your timeline.

  • The most common issue is a lack of documentation in the Environmental section — particularly around carbon emissions, energy use, and formal environmental policies. Small businesses are often doing the right things already, but without the data and documented evidence that EcoVadis rewards, those efforts don't translate into points. That's exactly the gap we specialize in closing. A basic GHG inventory and a few well-structured environmental policies can meaningfully move your score without requiring a major operational overhaul.

  • It's not technically required, but it helps significantly. Having a GHG inventory — even a basic one covering Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions — gives you verifiable data to submit as evidence in the Environmental section. It also unlocks other sustainability actions (like setting reduction targets) that EcoVadis rewards. If you don't have a carbon footprint yet, RyeStrategy offers carbon accounting as part of our full-service offering, so we can build it alongside your assessment preparation.

  • Absolutely. EcoVadis assessments renew annually, and your score can improve each cycle as you strengthen policies, gather better data, and implement the actions EcoVadis rewards. After your initial submission, we provide a detailed improvement roadmap so you know exactly where to focus next. Many of our clients improve meaningfully year-over-year — One Workplace improved their EcoVadis score by 5 points in two years, with an 8-point jump in the Environmental category.

  • We are not an official EcoVadis partner, but we are a trusted EcoVadis consultant with deep hands-on experience helping small and midsized businesses complete assessments, improve their scores, and earn badges. We're also a CDP-accredited provider — which reflects the same evidence-based, rigorous approach we bring to every EcoVadis engagement. Our expertise is specialized: we focus on SMBs, not corporate sustainability teams at Fortune 500 companies.
